Salmonella alert! Stay informed & protect yourself.

Salmonella’s back in the spotlight, causing some scary headlines. But before you throw out all your cantaloupes and granola, let’s separate fact from fiction.

First things first:

There are over 2,500 different types of Salmonella (called “serovars”) lurking out there. Think of them like “types” of the same bacteria. The travel-related Typhoid vaccine protects against just one specific type, Salmonella Typhi (which causes Typhoid fever, a very serious illness).

So, what’s causing the current buzz?

Precut cantaloupes: Recent cases of Salmonella types (called “serovars”, specifically Soahanina, Sundsvall, and Oranienburg) in Canada are linked to precut cantaloupes.

Quaker Oats recall: Over 40 products are recalled due to potential Salmonella contamination, but the specific strain is still unknown.

The good news?

Neither of these outbreaks are related to Typhoid fever, and the vast majority of Salmonella infections can be cleared by your body with some TLC (think fluids, rest, and maybe a bland diet).

While neither of these outbreaks are linked to the dreaded typhoid fever, it's still important to understand why it's a different beast altogether. Typhoid fever, which you want to avoid with vaccination when travelling, isn't just bad food poisoning – it's a potentially life-threatening illness caused by a specific strain called Salmonella Typhi.
