5 Tips for Surviving the Flu Season for Families with Small Kids

It's that time of the year again! With kids back in school or daycare, there's an uptick in sniffling noses and shared germs. We've all heard the common advice: wash hands, cover those sneezes, avoid the sick, and clean high-touch areas. But as the season intensifies, let's dive deeper into some less mentioned yet equally essential tips to keep your family flu-free.

1. Get your Flu + COVID shots

Leading the list is the most effective defence: vaccinations. Ensure every family member, especially those over 6 months and seniors, gets their annual flu shot. While you're at it, if eligible, also get the COVID-19 vaccine. Together, they're a dynamic duo in preventing severe illnesses.

Our clinic has received our shipment of Flu shots and we’re waiting to get our COVID shots soon too. For small kids we have FLUMIST which is a nasal spray flu shots, and for those over 65 we have FLUAD which is an inactivated vaccine. You don’t have to be a patient of the clinic so please come in and get your vaccination today.

2. Fun Hand washing Rituals for Kids

Yes, handwashing is common advice, but have you turned it into a fun ritual for your kids? Sing a short, catchy song (like two rounds of "Happy Birthday") to ensure they scrub for the recommended 20 seconds. Make it a game, and they'll be more likely to stick to it!

3. Educate on Elbow Etiquette

Kids love to mimic adults. Show them the cool way of coughing or sneezing into their elbows. Make a game of it: "Hide that sneeze in your elbow cave!"

4. Playdates? Think Open Spaces

Limit indoor playdates during peak flu season. Instead, opt for open spaces like parks where kids can still play, but germs have less chance of spreading in confined areas.

5. Toy Cleaning Day

Toys can be germ magnets. Make it a weekly ritual to clean and disinfect your kids' favorite toys. Turn it into a fun activity by playing "Toy Spa Day" where toys get a "relaxing bath."

There you have it! A mix of the commonly known and the lesser-discussed tips to ensure your family stays healthy this flu season. Remember, it's not just about dodging the flu; it's about building habits that safeguard your family's health year-round. Stay safe and play smart and don’t forget to book your flu shot at our clinic today.
